Call for Proposals | Fall 2021

We are now entering the third year of our Humanities in Action Mellon Grant and are excited to announce a fall call for proposals to support the development of community-engaged learning and gateway courses in humanistic fields. We will continue to consider proposals of $750 or under on a rolling basis and have two deadlines for faculty to apply for larger grants.
Community Engaged Proposals: Sunday, October 24th & Wednesday, December 8th
The earlier deadline for proposals allows for more time to work on planning and logistical coordination for spring 2022 community engaged courses. (Susan Sanning and our Mellon community engaged learning fellow, Lia Schifitto, are here to help with such planning and coordination.) However, proposals for later community-engaged courses may be submitted on the Oct 24th date as well.
Gateway Proposals: Wednesday, December 8th

The HIA grant is designed to help attract students to humanistic study through the development of new gateway courses that welcome students to unfamiliar fields and through courses that entail a community-engaged learning component that deepen students’ understanding of course content and the civic value of humanistic disciplines. Grant-supported activities can take many forms: some departments have expressed interest in redesigning or decolonizing their intro courses, and some faculty have discussed new humanities labs or alternative gateway classes. The grant can also strengthen community-engaged learning in the humanities by supporting faculty who wish to add a community engaged aspect to an existing class or to create an entirely new course that has a community engaged focus.
We realize that this continues to be a difficult and complicated time for Grinnell faculty, staff, students, and community partners. The challenges of COVID-19 remain even though we have returned to in-person teaching and community collaboration.
