Way the Humanities in Action Grant can support Grinnell Faculty

The HIA Grant can fund an array of items as they connect to the grant’s mission. Please note this list is not meant to be exhaustive and we are happy to work through any fiscally related questions with you. A monetized list is available on GrinnellShare.

Faculty Stipends

For the development of new gateway or community-engaged courses (paid over the summer)

For supervising a MAP arising out of a community-engaged class

For CLS collaborations that reinforce the purpose of the grant

Student Compensation

For students collaborating with a faculty member on the creation of new gateway or community-engaged course

For internships, research projects, or service-learning work-study positions that build on a community-engaged project started in a course

Community Partner Compensation

Honoraria (See Rubric on GrinnellShare)

Travel

For faculty, or (where appropriate) staff, to visit institutions that are conducting successful gateway or community-engaged courses or projects

For individuals to visit Grinnell College to discuss their successful gateway or community-engaged courses or projects

For faculty, or (where appropriate) staff, to attend conferences related to the national conversation about engaging students and the broader public in the humanities

For class transportation related to community-engaged course initiatives

For MAP & service learning work-study positions related to community engaged initiatives

For faculty to travel with the CLS on a humanistic trek

Conferences & Meetings

For faculty, or (where appropriate) staff, to attend conferences or meetings related to work with gateway courses or community-engaged learning

Equipment & Supplies

For gateway and community-engaged classes or their design

For supplies connected to student projects arising out of community-engaged courses

Other

Departmental retreats related to either gateway or community-engaged curricular design

Support for faculty-faculty tutorials

We are happy to consider proposals both large and small. Please let us know if there is something else we can do to support your work. We are also happy to talk to you about other funding sources that might support your work in partnership with the Humanities in Action grant.
